no tech christmas gift guide for teens

Things to buy your teen or pre-teen this year that aren’t techy

Today’s pre-teens are so inundated with technology and it’s shortening their attention span.

We are guilty of feeding the technology monster with devices and not adding in unplugged gifts to the list.

Give them some great non-techie gifts this season.

Copic Markers for the artist

These are some amazingly advanced Copic markers that put leading marker brands to shame with their ability to blend like pencils but offering the bold colors that artists love when using markers.

Imagine being able to shade, create shadows and contours all with markers.

Calligraphy Set

Calligraphy is a lost art that many a creative and artistic pre- teen may actually enjoy learning. A set of calligraphy tips, some ink and a few pads of paper would make an excellent gift.

Want to get fancy or take your little artist a step further? Add a light box for their sketches.

Polaroid is making a comeback

You know those fun cameras that were so popular back in the 80’s? They are making a comeback and today’s kids think they are super cool. I bought a blue and yellow Polaroid camera for my girls last Christmas and they love them.

They used them to take pictures in front of a backdrop at their birthday parties to send home with guests. Though some may think this is a techie item, compared to most technology these days I don’t think it qualifies.

Fun Graphic Tees

Everything from silly puns to their favorite characters, graphic T’s are all the rage. You will be super cool if you can nail this one by figuring out just the perfect T that fits their personality. I bought my bacon loving daughter this tee in her favorite color.

Board Games

There are always the classics: Monopoly, Uno, Scrabble, or Clue (this was on my girls’ list) but now there are so many new ones to add to your family collection. Classic Clue was joined by Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and more.

There’s tons of new games out here now as well. A favorite is the life-sized tumbling towers game of Jenga. We received Pie Face as a gift from a friend and it’s so fun!

Puzzle boxes

If you haven’t seen these before, you are in for a treat. Puzzle boxes are usually made out of wood with a “key” piece that allows the box to be unlocked by placing the puzzle piece in a slot.

These can be tiny and inexpensive or large, complex and pricey. Regardless of the type your purchase, they will be with the teen or pre-teen in your life.

“Adult” coloring books

These coloring books aren’t just just for adults but pre-teens as well. Everyone loves coloring a mandala or intricate paisley design. Add in a beautiful new set of colored pencils and you are all set.

Gourmet Cooking classes

Locate a gourmet cooking class offered in your area. These are hands-on, informative, and give your pre-teen an opportunity to broaden taste buds and be involved with their food.

Ask yourself if the items on your list can boost creativity or a skill worth nurturing. although some technology based gifts contribute to skills there is something to be said about adding in gifts that don’t require batteries.

Have a Merry Christmas and enjoy some of the best non-techie gifts right along side your pre-teen this year and live life a little less processed this holiday season.

Thanks Jasmin. Yes, changes quickly as they grow. Important to have unplugged options available for quiet time. 🙂

These gift ideas are perfect! I’m not a pre-teen but I would love to get one of these anyway.
